Beastly performance: The Snapdragon 835-powered Nokia 9 might get a variant with 8GB of RAM

Nokia 9, the supposed flagship which HMD Global is said to unveil later this year, has been the subject of a few major leaks over the last few days.

First, a French online publication posted images of what appears to be a prototype unit of the Nokia 9. The device was enclosed in a special “black box” which deliberately prevented curious eyes from getting a complete look at the phone’s design features. However, one of the leaked pictures contained the handset’s codename – “Unknown Heart” – alongside information that it sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and 4GB of RAM (among other things).
Later, a listing bearing the name “HMD Global TA-1004” appeared on popular smartphone benchmarking service Geekbench, albeit on the app’s older version. The tests showed that the product sports a Snapdragon 835 platform, 4GB of RAM, and Android 7.1.1, which led us to believe that this might be the same Nokia 9 from the earlier leak. Furthermore, the device achieved higher scores than the Galaxy S8, which serves as an additional confirmation of its high-end performance.
One would assume that these results would be the “high score” for the Nokia 9, but it looks like there might be an even more powerful variant of the flagship lurking around. This Thursday, a new “Unknown Heart” listing appeared on Geekbench, this time with 8GB of RAM. The single- and multi-core scores it achieved are actually much lower than the other version, but this could be due to the fact that the SD 835 platform might be tested at different clocking speeds.

There’s always the argument that so much RAM on a smartphone might be a bit of an overkill, but hey, it will certainly justify the $699 price tag which HMD Global is said to charge. It will be interesting to see whether this particular device will be tested at its maximum capabilities, as it might as well perform better than any handset we’ve seen to date.
