Liverpool Transfer News: Latest gossip and updates
Friday 26 May
14:35 Jurgen Klopp must sign a new left-back if he wants Liverpool to compete for the Premier League next season, according to Alan Brazil.
James Milner has been used for the majority of the campaign but Brazil thinks an improvement needs to be made in that area.
“I’ll say it again and people will hate me for saying it, if you’re going to win the Premier League, you need a better class, younger, than poor old James,” he said on talkSPORT.
“James has been great and he’s been a brilliant buy. But I’m sorry, if you’re going to take on Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, I’m sorry.”
10:30: Liverpool’s audacious approach for RB Leipzig’s highly-rated midfielder Naby Keita has hit the rocks.
The Reds have been linked with a £50-60m bid for the Guinea international, who played a pivotal role in Leipzig’s excellent Bundesliga season.
But chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff has released a defiant statement, insisting the German club will not be forced to sell any of their players.
He told The Times: “We have decided that we will not sell any player from our starting line-up.
“Ralf Rangnick [Leipzig’s sporting director] told this to our team at the end of the season. We will keep our team together and keep on developing.”
10:10: Jurgen Klopp wants FIVE new players in the January transfer window.
Klopp insists he will take his time to land the right players for Liverpool when the transfer window opens in July.
And the German boss wants some major additions to his squad.
As reported earlier (09:24) the Reds may struggle to land Naby Keita unless they stump up £50m.
But the Independent claim Klopp could enjoy more success with other targets.
Defenders Ryan Sessegnon, Virgil van Dyke and Andrew Robertson are all supposedly on the manager’s radar.
And Leipzig forward Timo Werner is also subject to interest from the Anfield club.
09:24: Liverpool have been told Naby Keita will cost hem £50m.
Liverpool are interested in landing RB Leipzig star Keita this summer.
But Leipzig are under no pressure to sell and are determined to keep their winger.
Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff said: “We have decided that we will not sell any player from our starting line-up.
The Liverpool Echo claim Leipzig would be receptive to a big-money bid – but that the Reds would have to break their transfer record to land the Guinea international.
08:28: More from Sport’s interview with Brazil boss Tite.
He has urged Philippe Coutinho and Neymar to link up at Barcelona before the World Cup next summer.
And he says he has spoken to Jurgen Klopp about how to get the best out of the Anfield star by playing him in a central position.
“Yes, this is an alternative if we shuffle (the team),” he said.
“I even talked to Klopp and him about this possibility.
“We need to create alternatives. Of course, doubts arise: will he be better marked in the centre and lose the element surprise? We will only see this when we do it.”
07:35: Philippe Coutinho would be a perfect fit at Barcelona, says Brazil manager Tite.
Barcelona have been linked with a swoop for Coutinho, although Liverpool are desperate to retain their star player.
Asked by Spanish newspaper Sport about a move to Barcelona, Tite said: “I’m always talking hypothetically, let’s make that clear.
“There have Sergio Busquets and the two midfielders, what in Italy they call ‘mezzalas’ (half wingers/attackers) that are Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta, that are the two thinkers of the side.
“Coutinho can play in that role. He is an ideal player for Barca.”
Klopp secured the Reds a return to the Champions League for next season.
The Reds are working hard on deals, although Klopp has conceded they are not on the verge of signing any of their targets.
And Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo Klopp will get his men.
“If I’m a top player around Europe and Jurgen picks the phone up and I get offered the chance to play for this club, which is moving forward in every single department and has a world class manager leading it, I’d be jumping at that opportunity,” he said.
“I want to play for him and I am 37 next week! For me, it’s such an exciting project. Not just because we qualified for the Champions League but the whole project.
“The next three, four, five, six years, whatever it turns out to be, are going to be very exciting and players will want to be a part of what Jurgen is doing.”
07:00: Liverpool are not interested in signing Iker Casillas and have responded with surprise at being linked to the goalkeeper.
Liverpool were said to have signed pre-contract terms with Spaniard Casillas this summer.
The former Real Madrid star is out of contract after leaving Porto at the end of this season.
But the Liverpool Echo report that the Reds have no intention of doing a deal.
Casillas, 36, is seeking a new club but he won’t be heading to Anfield.
Neither goalkeeper has greatly impressed this season but Klopp remains faithful in his shot-stoppers.
